Technology is changing everything in our lives today from the way we do things and even how we see things. Technology is even having an effect on Journalists, editors, and academics. People are changing their habits; therefore, journalists have to adapt during these fast-evolving times. Journalists and organizations need to invest intelligently in web platforms because the world population uses the internet almost every day. If not, they risk being ignored by the young people, so, therefore, it’s important to introduce Multimedia to the newsroom. It goes hand and hand with multimedia reporting on the field—more options for the consumer, the better. Especially nowadays, with so many ways to communicate on Social media, T.V, Paper, and even video games delivering Multi-Platform Journalism to the mainstream are important to reaching all of your audiences. “The gaming audience is large and diverse. Gamers are ready for factual games that help them understand the world around them. And the interactive nature of video games gives journalists an opportunity to reach audiences in powerful new ways. It is an opportunity not to be missed”.(Charles Miller) Videos are taking over industries around the world and it even outsells films and music. It’s a fast-growing industry. Everything is changing around the world due to technological advances, and adapting to this is very important, so we don’t get left behind.
The Guardian published The Firestorm by Jon Henley and Laurance Topham. Firestorm is a multimedia experience. It tells the story of the fires that devastated the Tasmanian town of Dunalley. This multimedia experience has writing, video documentaries, and interactive things on the page. When you’re reading some of the articles, the background is moving, or a slideshow of images is happening. There are five chapters in the post, and each has pictures, video, and writing pieces, it’s very user friendly. The interface catches your attention and makes you want to read the post and explore the topic. Very similar to what The Washington Post published (The Waypoint). This is the new direction that new journalism is going forward in the future.

Peace Journalism focuses on the structure and cultural causes of violence. It focuses on the impact on the lives of people in conflict as part of the explanation for the violence from structural and cultural causes. Peace journalism is defined “when editors and reporters make choices – of what to report, and how to report it – that create opportunities for society at large to consider and value non-violent responses to conflict.” (Lynch and McGoldrick, 2005)
It shows the contexts of conflicts and backgrounds; it comes from all sides of the story. It also highlights peace ideas and initiatives from anywhere at any time. It’s a type of journalism that offers the perspective of war and conflict than is provided by the mainstream media. Peace Jornlis cover the effects of war and violence, such as their cost of casualties in death and the disabled. They are trying to figure out what divides opposed parties, as you see in mainstream media war coverage. Peace journalism tries to find any possible ways of agreement between them.
Peace journalism goes over the causes of conflict and leading discussions about solutions. Reports reject Offical propaganda and get information from all sources. Peace journalism gives a voice to the voiceless, instead of reporting of the people that have power. “Peace journalists thoughtfully select the images they use, understanding that they can misrepresent an event, exacerbate an already dire situation, and re-victimize those who have suffered.” (Steven Youngblood) The journalist also considers the consequences of their reporting and carefully chooses to analyze the word they use. Peace journalists select images understanding that they can misrepresent an event.”Some journalists, in some places, will find themselves comfortable with the idea that they should decide, at the outset, to harness their journalism to the furtherance of socially desirable goals.” (Annabel McGoldrick ) Johan Galtung was born on October 24, 1930, is a Norwegian sociologist, and he is also the founder of the discipline of peace and conflict studies. Galtung was the principal founder of Peace Research, and then he established the journal of peace research, a new paradigm for journalists covering conflict situations.

This photo was taken by Stephane de Sakutin. The photo was published by France 24. The description of the photo is A member of the nursing staff at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris. The picture was published on March 27 of 2020. This picture tells a lot about what’s going around the world currently. It shows the hospitals are running out of space for patients, and they have to take out tents to make more space for people battling with COVID-19. The photo shows how difficult dealing with COVID-19 has been.
The picture was published by The Guardian, and the photographer is Christophe Petit-Tesson. The description of the photo is a nurse wearing protective gear at a newly-converted resuscitation intensive care department for coronavirus patients in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris. This picture to me because it sends a very strong message. It represents the doctors and nurses fighting in the front lines helping patients recover from COVID-19. The photo shows how dangerous the situation is by the protective gear the nurse is wearing. I feel like the mask is a staple of 2020 so far.
This picture was taken in Madrid, Spain. The photographer is Maria Sosa Troya, and it was published by El Pais on March 27, 2020. The description of the photo is The field hospital set up at Ifema, Madrid’s exhibition center. I picked this picture because it shows you how full the hospitals are. The picture shows how the pandemic is reaching its peak, and hospitals are running out of resources. This picture shows how bad COVID-19 has spread throughout Spain and Europe.
This is a photo I took of my home town in Olympia, Washington. I took them during the midday. During this time, the state recommended for people to stay in their home but was not a complete lockdown. The only things open are grocery stores, pharmacies, and banks. This park is called Capital lake; it’s right next to the capitol building of Washington and downtown. I think this picture represents the situation pretty well in my hometown, showing the emptiness of the park. Typically the park is filled with people walking, running, and walking with their pets.
The picture that I picked is an animal that was taken in captivity. The picture shows a leopard that looks like to be behind a glass window at a zoo. I think this conflict is related to animals being captive and not being in the wild. Animal captivity is a big thing internationally; it’s unhealthy for some animals to be captive. You have animals with broken families, unhealthy to animals, boredom, long miserable years, and even shorter life spans. The photographer of this picture is Silva Contrasto. The first media publishing of this photo was published on January 1, 1999, and then it entered the 2000 photo contest. I feel like this group of photos gave another view on animal captivity at the time. It made the public pay more attention to animal captivity issues and be more aware of the consequences for the animals’ lives—the photo educated people around the world on an international level about animal captivity.

The photo I picked was third place winner under the category of portraits/stories. The first-place winner is a picture of a boy in Cairo, Egypt, for a gathering of mawlid for Hussein, the grandson of the prophet Mohammed. It’s a religious event that has been passed down through generations. The photo was taken by Denis Dailleux, published on Agence Vu for DS Magazine. I think it depends on how big the event of the photo is showing. A photo works best when it tells a narrative that the first place winner shows in the picture. I noticed that the first place winner had a very in-depth description of the photo compared to the second and third place winners. The first place picture had facts about the event going on. All of these pictures tell a story and are fascinating to look at. The first place photo shows the people attending this specific religious event they’re attending and shows the environment.

Photojournalism is very important to the world we live in today, especially with the internet. Photojournalism reports the current events around the world. The photo should be telling the story of the article by just looking at the photo. A good picture has a statement being made, which makes the message more effective. I think the main goal for World Press Photo is to be able to share all of the stories with the world. Just to remind people that they are things happening around the world all the time. Help us to stay connected with each other. I think the main goal for World Press Photo has spread awareness through visual art.

I feel like Risk the movie is an excellent source to get a different point of view on this topic. I feel like this film tackles the issue of the government’s control and the freedom of the press. You see people that support Julian Assange and also the staff that works with him for Wikileaks. I would say Laura Poitras portrays as the Journalists, which she also created this film reporting. I think the film documentary was good at telling a political controversy story cinematically very well. It was very interesting to me to discover a little bit more about the man behind WikiLeaks and see what happened to him and to see some of the events that occurred behind the scenes during the 2016 election. The file shared useful information, but I feel like the story can be told a little bit better. It sometimes fails to stay focused on its subject, but the documentary poses some interesting questions, And this film certainly gets no closer to understanding Mr. Wikileaks. If I was completely honest, I did not care about Julian Assange’s personal point of view as much.

My first source is Jaime Salcedo. He is my father. He is the oldest person in my family and has a perspective of that day. He has a very great view of how the world works.
He was on the 405 Freeway, going to work listening to the radio when the first plane crashed into the tower. Shortly after that, he said the second plane crashed into the tower. He was in complete shock. He thought it was a bad joke and then the third plane hit the pentagon. He was mixed with emotions, angry, scared, and hopeless. He called home to speak with his wife to make sure she was okay. During this time, her English skills weren’t the strongest, and he was afraid that she wouldn’t understand what was happening. He said he was very confused about the attack. He prayed for the families of the victims/
The second source is Amanda Beers. One of my teachers in high school. She lives in Washington, and she was a teacher at this time.
She remembers 9/11 like it was yesterday. She didn’t know what was going on. She thought it was a total accident when the first plane hit the first building. Then when she said the second plane hit the second twin tower, that’s when she knew it was a terrorist attack on the United States. She said her heart dropped when the second plane hit. She was watching all this happening in the news. The first thing she did was call her husband to see if he was fine and if he knew what was going on. Luckily, after a couple of attempts of calling him, he eventually did answer, and he was safe. During this time, she was also a teacher at an elementary school. Classes were canceled for about a week. When they returned to classes, it was a quiet couple of days, a lot of reflecting on what happened. She said it was for the students that had family in New York. It was a long recovery process for everyone.
My third source is Sabina Salcedo. She is my sister. She is the youngest in my family. She is very bright in school and has a great view of things. She was born in 2004 three years after the event of happening, so it will be very interesting to hear what she has to say about it.
She was born three years after the events of 9/11. She started in the interview that it was a horrible event in the United States, and a lot of people lost their lives that day. She is now a Sophomore in High School. She told me how she found out about 9/11 was through the history channel, and she mentioned around the first or second grade. The teacher would teach the class about the events of 9/11 and show a movie/ documentary. She said the planes hitting the building were one that she remembers the most.
The importance of human and personal stories in the building of our collective memories is a big part of our society. It’s important to hear people’s stories about how we learned about the past and grow. All of this source had different experiences on this day. I feel like this exercise helped reflect on this day and reminded us how far we have grown as a community since the events of 9/11. Journalism has an increasingly significant role in our lives as information, data, and social media become more influential. As journalists are exploring this as a professional career and citizens see it as something that is personal work at some points.
I think what The Washington Post did with The Waypoint is a great way to tell a news story from a different point of view. The complex stories needed to be told in a sophisticated way as their journeys. If you are a visual person, you’re going to love The Waypoint for its highly visual presentation and the self-guided multimedia storytelling. The Waypoint gives you a visual ride through the Turkish coast to the Greek Island of Lesbos. The Waypoint gives you a first-person view of migrants and refugees on their journeys to safety from start to finish.
The examples that The Waypoint is showing is the future of storytelling for journalists. It’s a different way to tell many stories at once. It’s giving the reader a better picture and understanding of the situation. It’s an excellent way for journalism to show emotion in their stories. It’s a way for journalists to make their stories more impactful for the reader. I think the concepts we went over in class like compassion fatigue, ambivalent narratives, and global compassion discourse are shown in a way visually.
Georgia abandoned resorts Tskaltubo which were once suets spas is now being called home by refugees. “Georgia plans to spend millions turning an abandoned Soviet-era spa town into a tourist attraction. But Tskaltubo’s decaying sanatoriums are also home to refugees from a past civil war, and their future is uncertain.” Matthew Goddard, Tskaltubo (BBC, Feb 2020)
Tensions rise with the refugee crisis in Lesbos. “Greek authorities are struggling to cope with rising tension on islands where pressure from a new influx of refugees and migrants has reached a critical point.” Helelna Smith, The Observer (The Guardian, Feb 9, 2020)
Greek locals protesting overcrowded refugee camps. “Thousands of Greek residents and business owners joined a strike and protested Wednesday on the Greek islands hardest hit by migration, demanding that the government ease severe overcrowding at refugee camps.” Derek Gatopulous, Greek islanders strongly protest overcrowded refugee camps (abcnews, Feb 10, 2020)

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-47941794 – Notre Dame
The first personal news story is about the Notre Dame de Paris fire. The fire destroyed one of France’s most famous landmarks. This type of news is an international event. The church is recognized all over the world and has a place in history. I remember when this broke the story, I was in class using Twitter, and I saw it trending on my feed. The videos at first showed that the roof of the cathedral was on fire, and then moments later, the fire was getting much worse. Eventually, the building spire and roof collapsed. This made me realize a symbol of a country with so much history can shock the entire world. I feel like the United States news outlets were reporting on this the whole day. US President Donald Trump said it was “horrible to watch.” This shows the US was fully aware of the situation. I feel like moments similar stay in people’s memories because it’s a historical building that has been around for 800 years, and millions of tourists visit this landmark every year. BBC new stands for British Broadcasting Corporation. The network gathers news and broadcasting of news and current affairs. The area that this new outlet survives is specific services for the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. I think their target audience is adults in the UK and internationally. This type of news hit me personally on a cultural level because my family is catholic, and I know how much that building meant for my family and around the world.

https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/las-vegas-shooting/las-vegas-police-investigating-shooting-mandalay-bay-n806461 – Las Vegas Shooting
The second news story is about the Las Vegas Shooting. The life lost from the las vegas shooting was 59 Killed, and more than 500 people hurt and a country music festival. I was the worst mass shooting in modern American history. I believe this was an international event. I was a significant event going on at the time, and so many people were hurt, fiscal or emotional in some way. I remember watching TV when this new appeared, and then I went on social media to get more information. The videos that were being posted was just scary to watch. NBC stands for National Broadcasting Company. NBC is an American broadcast television network. It operates a 24-hour cable news network called MSNBC. NBC News has a partnership with Euronews, which is a 24-hour news network. I was interested in this news story because it was in the US at a music festival. This was a massive shooting that shocked the United States.

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/09/us/politics/hillary-clinton-donald-trump-president.html – Donald Trump being Elected
The last news story was Donald Trump is being elected as president of the United States. I believe this was a nationwide news event in the US. I was watching TV when the election was going live and remember social media was going crazy about it. When the news broke about Donald Trump being elected, everyone that I followed and my friends were in just in complete shock and in disbelief of what was happening. I think people didn’t expect at all that Donald Trump was going to win and especially how he ran his campaign. It was the first year that I can vote, so it was something to me, and I personally didn’t expect that Trump was going to be elected. The next day, my school was just an awkward vibe, nothing that I’ve ever felt before. I think this election is a perfect example of an event that will stick in people’s memories for a very long time. The New York Times is an American newspaper based in New York City. It has a significant worldwide influence and readership. It was founded in 1851. The New York Times is ranked 18th in the world by circulation and 3rd in the US.At this point in time, I was interested in this type of news beats. It was the first time that I could vote. I would say I get my news from social media, news networks on TV, and I do use some new app on my phone to get my information.
